Title: Accounting Associate
Supervisor: Accounting Manager
Location: New York, NY

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Position Summary

The Accounting Associate will be responsible for providing general support to the accounting team. S/he will be responsible for data processing, posting, reconciliation, and filing in accordance with organizational documentation procedures. S/he will also assist the Accounting Manager with special projects.

Responsibilities

  • Act as primary contact for taking credit card payments related to invoices or payments via phone as needed;
  • Assist the Accounting Manager to coordinate the monthly close process;
  • Assist the Accounting Manager with monthly reconciliations of foreign office accounts;
  • Communicate with foreign offices to ensure timely resolution of accounting issues;
  • Assist the Accounting Manager with bank reconciliations including researching unidentified items;
  • Assist the Accounting Manager with monthly review and reconciliation of general ledger accounts;
  • Administer the corporate Amex card programs by reviewing monthly Amex statements under the supervision of the Accounting Manager and reviewing submitted expense reports and receipts to ensure documentation is complete and in accordance with Rainforest Alliance procedure;
  • Maintain accounting reference documents, chart of accounts, subaccounts, projects/tasks and other specific reports on Rainforest Alliance intranet as requested; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or comparable work experience;
  • 2 - 5 years experience working in an accounting department with demonstrated experience working with an accounting system;
  • Strong computer skills (MS office with advanced proficiency in Excel required); knowledge of Solomon accounting software a plus;
  • Ability to interact professionally with culturally and linguistically diverse staff and clients;
  • Ability to work within a team structure as well as independently, take initiative and be attentive to detail;
  • Dependability and excellent organizational skills; and
  • Spanish fluency a plus.
