The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.
Position Summary
The Director, Evaluation and Research (E&R), will provide organizational leadership and will support program divisions through research, monitoring and mapping efforts aimed at maximizing the scope and quality of information gathered. S/he will provide data and analysis on program impact and ensure timely delivery and reporting to the highest standards of quality for various RA projects. S/he will provide advice and input to division directors regarding program indicators. S/he will also collaborate with Development to pursue funding opportunities in support of the unit's functions.

Responsibilities
- Develop E&R policies and tools;
- Coordinate and standardize RA indicators across programs;
- Provide analysis and reporting on RA wide indicators to senior staff;
- Develop and broaden academic and other external partnerships including research to determine the impacts of certification and other RA activities;
- Manage the development and application of GIS data and mapping tools;
- Ensure long term program and financial sustainability of the unit;
- Coordinate with the Development team, as necessary, to establish a mechanism to ensure the monitoring policies and tools are effectively implemented;
- Provide expertise and oversight in the design of project-specific monitoring and evaluation activities within all programs;
- Conduct and coordinate research and analysis efforts in support of RA strategic planning and program design;
- Further develop, manage and maintain the RA monitoring data base, including, but not limited to:
- Working with component programs to prioritize mapping efforts and providing related analysis;
- Harmonizing and setting up protocols for GIS data collection through audit process; and
- Maintaining and managing a centralized mapping data sets and images;
- Coordinate and collaborate with other organizations and initiatives with a view to share learning and enhance RA's influence;
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities; develop funding proposals and secure grants;
- For large, multi-year projects:
- Provide input and guidance on developing the research and evaluation component and budget for proposals; and
- Provide support during the start-up phase in the project M&E function, such as consultation and/or review of performance monitoring plans, impact studies, and mapping.
- Conduct and/or coordinate research projects and manage data analysis to gauge program effectiveness, support strategic decision-making, and assist in the design of proposed new program initiatives; and
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- MA, MS or other advanced degree in natural or social sciences; a Ph.D preferred;
- 10 - 15 years research experience, with proven publication record preferred;
- Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation requirements of multi-lateral donors (USAID, IDB, UNDP, WB, etc);
- Knowledge of research design with ability to develop research methodologies;
- Knowledge of both tropical and temperate ecosystems;
- Proven ability to coordinate and collaborate with scientific organizations producing publishable results;
- Practical Evaluation & Research Skills;
- Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication and presentation skills;
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive manner;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals;
- Knowledge of RA and independent assurance systems (certifications, verifications, assessments);
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook) with a demonstrated experience in database software;
- Fluency in English and Spanish, additional languages such as French and/or Portuguese a plus; and
- Ability to travel approximately 30% per year, nationally and internationally.
