10.13.2009 Reflections on the State of China's Forestry Industry The Rainforest Alliance speaks with Xu Bin, project director of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, to get his thoughts on China's booming forestry sector -- and efforts to green it. 10.8.2009 New Report: Survival of Great Apes Linked to Responsible Forestry A new study by the World Wildlife Fund confirms what the Rainforest Alliance has long believed: responsibly managed forests can provide important conservation benefits for threatened and endangered species. Released in September, "Great Apes and Logging" concludes that Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified forests can be valuable additions to protected areas for great apes, while also functioning as corridors between their fragmented habitats. 9.4.2009 Forest Conservation: 2,000 Years and Counting A new study published in the July issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science reveals that the Maya practiced, and reaped the benefits of, responsible forestry. In fact, researchers found that abandoning responsible forest management practices was to the detriment of the entire culture -- and may have led to its downfall. In light of this eye-opening report, we spoke with Guatemala-based Rainforest Alliance TREES coordinator Omar Samayoa. 8.14.2009 In Memory of Les Paul: The Man Behind the Legendary Guitar Yesterday, Les Paul, the man who made much of modern music possible, passed away at the age of 94. While we applaud him for revolutionizing the music industry, the Rainforest Alliance honors his memory for an additional reason: he was a codesigner of -- and the inspiration for -- the Les Paul SmartWood Standard. 7.8.2009 Ethical Corporation Applauds Companies Working with the Rainforest Alliance In the June issue of United Kingdom-based Ethical Corporation magazine, monthly columnist Greenwasher applauds companies working with the Rainforest Alliance that "get it on responsible business." We couldn't help being pleased by the companies named, the majority of which we're collaborating with. In fact, we work with five of those specifically cited for their commitments to sourcing commodities from sustainably-managed farms and forests. View additional blog entries in this category. |
