April 2008
4.30.2008 Notes from the Lipton Sweden Launch Based in the Netherlands, Joke Aerts is the European network coordinator for the Rainforest Alliance's sustainable agriculture program. Regularly on the road she recently headed over to Sweden for the launch of Lipton Sweden, a brand impacted by Unilever's commitment to sourcing its entire tea supply from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. While the Rainforest Alliance has encountered resistance in Sweden –- a country more familiar with, and receptive to, the work of other certification bodies -- thanks to Joke's outreach efforts and those of others on the Rainforest Alliance's European team, Swedish journalists and consumers are beginning to understand and embrace our work to make farming, forestry and tourism socially and environmentally sustainable. 4.29.2008 Notes from the China Forestry Conference On April 2, 2008 in Beijing, the Rainforest Alliance along with a number of other environmental organizations held "Developing Certified Forests, Forest Products, and Markets," the first major conference on certified forestry and forest product markets in China. Participants explored the potential of certified sustainable forestry to green the supply chains in China's booming paper, print, packaging, indoor and outdoor furniture, and construction materials industries. Blogger Michael Thiemann is the training manager for Rainforest Alliance/TREES program. 4.23.2008 Rainforest Alliance Staffer Visits Certified Farms in Costa Rica Staff members of the Rainforest Alliance communications, marketing and education division recently traveled to Costa Rica's Sarapiquí region to visit a number of sustainable farms and tourism enterprises. The group included writer/editor Phil Berroll -- read his account of the trip. 4.14.2008 Rainforest Alliance Staffers Hit the Red Carpet In late March, Rainforest Alliance PR consultant Anita Neville made her big-screen debut in "A Tale of Two Continents." 4.9.2008 Urban Students Get Up Close and Personal with Rainforest Animals In March of 2008, the Rainforest Alliance joined forces with the Sea World and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, a wildlife species and habitat conservation and education organization, to give a group of students a face-to-face encounter with some amazing rainforest dwellers. Here, Maria Ghiso, outreach coordinator for the Rainforest Alliance's education team, recounts the experience. No additional blog entries were posted during the month. |
