Ring in Climate Week NY°C with the Rainforest Alliance Question: What do Holy Mass, the Dow Jones, and long-distance cycling have in common? Answer: The Holy Mass for Climate Justice, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index's 10-year anniversary celebration, and the Brita Climate Ride are all events held during Climate Week NY°C, a seven-day series of climate-related events running from September 20 to 26 in New York City. Climate Week NY°C was organized to coincide with a day of ministerial meetings on climate change led by United Nations (UN) Secretary Ban Ki-moon. Held on September 22, many global leaders -- in town for the UN General Assembly later in the week -- plan to attend. While not formally related to December's UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the September 22 meetings will provide an opportunity for world leaders to further discussions about how to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
In addition to providing a platform for businesses, government and civilians to demonstrate support for a global deal on climate change, Climate Week NY°C also presents an opportunity to bring climate change issue back to Earth, tying it to our daily lives and actions. If you're in New York, be sure to catch the Rainforest Alliance's own Danner Friedman speaking about responsible consumption (which includes purchasing Rainforest Alliance Certified products) after a screening of the film "No Impact Man" on September 22. As he'll tell you, supporting Rainforest Alliance certification and sustainable production helps to combat climate change. How? Responsible farming, forestry and tourism ensure that forests remain intact. And forests store huge quantities of the carbon emissions that lead to climate change. In fact, deforestation is responsible for 20 percent of carbon emissions globally. That's more than the emissions from cars, trucks and busses combined.
Are you looking for more inspiration to take immediate action on climate change? Attend "The Age of Stupid" premiere, alongside Rainforest Alliance senior vice president Ana Paula Tavares. She'll be walking the green carpet with other special guests, including former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. In the words of the LA Times the film is " 'An Inconvenient Truth' but with a personality." You don't have to be in New York to watch the movie, either. Visit the "Age of Stupid" Web site to find out how you can watch the premiere live online on September 21 and 22. (Watching from home does mean that you'll miss out on the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ chocolate --kindly donated by Newman's Own Organics® -- to be distributed at the premiere.)
