Central to our sustainable forestry efforts is independent third-party certification, which assures consumers that the wood products they purchase come from well-managed forests. With the launch of SmartWood in 1989, the Rainforest Alliance developed the world's first global forestry certification program and the first to rely on market forces to conserve forests. We are one of the founders of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), the most respected forestry standard-setter in the world. We are now the largest FSC-accredited certifier and have certified the greatest number of community and indigenous operations to FSC standards.
In addition to FSC certification, we also offer timber legality verification and certification services to ensure that your wood supply comes from legal sources as well as verification and validation of forest-based carbon projects under a variety of standards.
Separate from our certification and verification efforts, we help communities and businesses market their forest products effectively and improve their business skills through our Training, Extension, Enterprises and Sourcing (TREES) program. And by promoting green building and encouraging those companies that purchase forest goods to incorporate sustainability into their sourcing policies, our SmartSource program is strengthening the demand for certified products.
