The project goal is to conserve the natural and cultural qualities, including the stored carbon, of forest lands in the Chaco-Pantanal transition zone of Alto Paraguay, that are of high conservation value but threatened with transformation to cattle ranching. Private holdings that are legally available for ranching development are targeted, particularly those that help maintain ecological connectivity in the general context of on-going fragmentation and isolation at a landscape level.

Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO), the Project Proponent, is a leading service provider to the offshore oil and gas industry. The World Land Trust (WLT) is contracted to develop the project in collaboration with its Paraguayan project partner Guyra Paraguay (GP).

The aim of the Paraguay Forest Conservation Project is to sufficiently Protection of the forest in the project area that are threatened to be cleared will prevent the emission of 255,686 tCO2e into the atmosphere over the 20 year project lifetime. The project is being validated against VCS standard to quantify emissions reductions from avoided planned deforestation and uses the CCB standard to certify that co-benefits are being created or maintained.
