This Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Association- approved methodology provides step-by-step procedures to enable the conservative estimation of net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from projects which aim to protect forestlands that would be logged in the absence of a payment to keep them standing and maintain their carbon stocks (the specific project type is called “logged to protected forest”, known as LtPF, and it is a type of improved forest management, or IFM). The methodology provides guidance on project eligibility, boundaries and scope, estimating greenhouse gas emissions reductions and resulting Verified Carbon Units (VCUs, as the currency of carbon credits in the VCS system), monitoring carbon stocks and other fundamental components of forest carbon project development. This is the first LtPF project methodology approved for use under the VCS.
