Katahdin Iron Works Ecological Reserve Project
The 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property was purchased by the Appalachian Mountain Club (dba AMC Maine Woods Inc.) from International Paper in December 2003. Since the time of purchase, a 10,000 acre portion of the property has been managed as an ecological reserve, and was permanently designated as such under the terms of a conservation easement held by the State of Maine Department of Conservation recorded on March 22, 2007.
Because the Project Area is legally designated as a permanent ecological reserve under the terms of the conservation easement, carbon will accumulate within the Project Area through natural successional processes and the long-term development to late-successional forest conditions. Registered with the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) as an Improved Forest Management (IFM) Project, 123,344 tCo2e emission reductions were verified during the initial reporting period of March 22, 2007 - October 31, 2012. Compared to the common practice baseline, the Project will continue to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions over the 100 year project life time.
