Promoting Sustainable Development through Natural Rubber Tree Plantations

Project Type:

Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR)

Area:

2,366 hectares

Location(s):

Guatemala– Suchitepéquez and Izabal departments

This project is designed to promote sustainable development and alleviate pressures on tropical forestlands by establishing natural rubber tree plantations, through its pursuit of certification to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards for responsible forest management.  Over 2,000 hectares of degraded pastureland will be planted with Hevea brasiliensis spp. (rubber trees) on 7 different farms located in the Suchitepéquez and Izabal departments. The reforestation effort is projected to sequester a total of 1,739,855 t CO2e over 42 years. The revenue derived from the sale of carbon credits from the project will enable it to pursue FSC certification.

Rainforest Alliance Evaluation:

Validated Conformance with the Voluntary Carbon Standard 2007.1: October 26th, 2010 (RA-VAL-VCS-013806); April 1st, 2011(RA-VER-VCS-014289).
