Taken as a whole, the REDD methodology modules constitute a complete REDD baseline and monitoring methodology. The Rainforest Alliance assessed a total of 17 modules and tools that are applicable to project activities that reduce emissions from planned and unplanned deforestation and forest degradation. The modules address issues ranging from estimating carbon stocks in various carbon pools (above- and below-ground biomass, soil carbon, etc.) to quantifying emissions associated with fuelwood extraction, market-based activities and biomass burning.

Given the modules’ flexible nature, it is anticipated that their approval by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) will facilitate the development of REDD projects globally—particularly those that aim to meet the VCS standard.
