Tropical Mix Project
395.7 hectares total; 159.7 of which were verified to the CarbonFix Standard
Panamá – Darién Region
This project, which is also certified to the Forest Stewardship Council standard for responsible forest management, is planting 40% teak (Tectona grandis) and 60% native species to reforest degraded pastureland. The project plans to use low-impact harvesting techniques when it harvests trees on a 25-year rotation in order to minimize impacts on biodiversity. 15% of the project’s area has been set aside for conservation and the project has established vegetative buffers around watercourses and conserved wetlands in the project area. The project, which estimates net CO2 sequestration of 235-261 tCO2e per hectare over the course of the 50 year project lifetime, has generated 200 jobs for local residents to date.
Verified conformance with the CarbonFix Standard v. 2.1: February 10th, 2011 (RA-VER-CFS-013678); validated conformance with the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards 2nd Ed: March 2nd, 2011 (RA – VAL – CCB – 013680).
