The project seeks to protect lowland, hill and montane tropical rainforests in the mountainous Ulu Masen ecosystem of Aceh, Indonesia. The area comprises one of the largest contiguous forest blocks in Indonesia and together with the connecting Leuser Ecosystem forms a 3.3-million hectare forest that is home to Sumatran tigers, elephants, rhinoceros and orangutan. The project builds upon the Aceh Forest Environment Program, which features a redesign of the conventional forest concession system, a logging moratorium (while consultations on spatial planning are occurring) and a shift toward community-based forest management areas.
