The project seeks to establish protection for lowland, hill, and montane tropical rainforest in the mountainous Ulu Masen ecosystem in Aceh, Indonesia. This is one of the largest contiguous forest blocks in Indonesia and connects to the Leuser Ecosystem, together forming a 3.3 million hectare forest area with Sumatran tiger, elephant, rhino, and orangutan. The project builds upon the Aceh Forest Environment Program, which features a redesign of the conventional concession system, a logging moratorium while consultations on spatial planning are occurring, and work towards eventual community based forest management areas.
