29,600 acres (12,000 hectares)
Costa Rica -- Central Volcanic Range Conservation Area; Cartago and Limón
Rainforest Alliance Evaluation:
Validated conformance with the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards, 1st Ed., Gold Level: October 28th, 2009-October 27th, 2014 (RA-VAL-CCB-011409).
This multi-site project expects the participation of up to 100 individual landowners located within the Conservation Area of the Cordillera Volcánica Central (ACCVC, its Spanish acronym), in the Costa Rican provinces of Cartago and Limón. The project area falls within an important biological corridor and will serve to link the Braulio Carrillo, Irazú and Turrialba national parks, as well as the Guácimo and Pococí aquifers. The region boasts one of the highest rates of endemism in what is already a mega-diverse country, and this avoided deforestation project will protect the habitat of endemic and threatened species. The project was awarded the coveted "Gold Level" validation to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards, due in large part to its focus on native species, its commitment to involving local communities and its emphasis on climate change adaptation.
