Darkwoods Carbon Forest Project

Project Type:

Improved Forest Management

54,792 hectares

Canada  – British Columbia – Nelson

Rainforest Alliance Evaluation:

Validated conformance with the Verified Carbon Standard 2007.1: April 21st, 2011 (RA-VAL-VCS-014368).

This project is designed to protect a large contiguous tract of forest, crucial watershed sources and vital species in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, from the threats of unsustainable logging. Darkwoods further aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by stopping forest degradation through the implementation of Logged to Protected Forest (LtPF) practices under the Verified Carbon Standard. The lands in and around the project area are an important habitat for nearly 20 at-risk species including the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus). By focusing on conservation management and the maintenance of forest carbon stocks, this project anticipates emission reductions of 14.66 million tCO2e over its 100-year lifespan.
