Beyond Local

While sourcing local food and working with local businesses is important, many of the items you use most on campus can’t be local. Coffee, chocolate and many other products are grown and harvested in the tropics, where unsustainable farming practices threaten ecosystems and livelihoods. A comprehensive campus sourcing policy includes a commitment to certified sustainable products from all origins -- that’s where the Rainforest Alliance comes in.

Ask for the Frog

Many campus cafeterias and food service operations provide comment cards and suggestion boards for feedback. Use these tools to ask food service managers about cafeteria sourcing, and let them know that you want sustainably grown coffee, tea, chocolate, fruit and fruit drinks -- Rainforest Alliance Certified™ products that are grown and harvested with respect for the environment, workers and surrounding communities. Tell them you want to see the frog on campus.

Involve your friends and classmates! During busy hours, set up a table in, or nearby, a cafeteria or coffee shop. Spread the word. Use our ready-to-print informational handouts to let everyone know that Rainforest Alliance Certified™ products are good for people and the planet. Invite your peers to fill out comment cards asking food service managers to source Rainforest Alliance Certified products.
