As the forestry division manager for South America, Katherine represents the organization with companies, government agencies, academic institutions and other groups. She also provides guidance and support to the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program.
Katherine is also responsible for the forest component of Rainforest Alliance’s “Alliance for the Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Andean Amazon”, a USAID funded project part of the Initiative for Conservation in the Andean Amazon (ICAA). She coordinates, supervises and ensures the implementation of all forestry-related activities in Peru and Bolivia. She also coordinates with staff and consultants hired for this project, local and regional governments, ICAA partners, in order to successfully reach the project’s expected results. She also ensures that all activities implemented in the South America region are based on the Rainforest Alliance’s strategic plan.
Katherine is a biologist with a Master’s degree in forest resources and conservation from the University of Florida, Gainesville and has over ten years of experience working with Forest Stewardship Council certification systems. Prior to joining the Rainforest Alliance, she worked with WWF-Bolivia as forest officer and coordinator of a regional community certification project. Katherine worked with the Rainforest Alliance from 1996 to 1998 and later rejoined the organization in 2001. Since then she has served as the head of our South America Regional office, based in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
