Sustainable Forestry

Forest Stewardship Council Certification

Based in Bonn, Germany, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sets the global standard for responsible forestry. The FSC was established in 1993 by a collaboration of businesses and environmental groups, including the Rainforest Alliance, which is now the world's leading FSC certifier of forestlands. Find out why the Rainforest Alliance supports the FSC standards.

FSC certification is available for all companies and organizations that produce or sell forest products. To make certification accessible to small landowners, the Rainforest Alliance offers various options for reducing costs.

Fallen Leaves on the Ground and Fern Buds

Forest Management Certification

Available to all operations involved in growing and harvesting trees, including forest companies, government forestry agencies, mid-sized forest managers, indigenous peoples and groups of small landowners.

Chain-of-Custody (CoC) Certification

For all companies that use or sell forest products but do not grow and harvest trees. CoC candidates include sawmills, secondary manufacturers, broker/distributors, wholesalers, retailers, printers and paper merchants. CoC certification verifies company systems for tracking and handling FSC-certified forest products within the company’s operations and ensures the credibility of FSC claims.

Controlled Wood Certification

Controlled Wood certification enables forest management companies to demonstrate that their wood products have been controlled to avoid wood that is illegally harvested, harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights, harvested in forests where high conservation values are threatened by management activities, harvested in forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use, and harvested from forests where genetically modified trees are planted. Controlled Wood certification involves a five-year contract with annual auditing. Controlled Wood verification is available to FSC-certified companies that need to control their non-FSC virgin inputs.

Non-Timber Forest Products Certification

For operations that manage and harvest non-timber forest products.
