Sustainable Forestry

Introduction

Forestry Company Login

Because more than six billion people rely on trees and plants to build houses, produce paper, make furniture and stay warm, the pressures on the world's forests are staggering. The Rainforest Alliance works to encourage better on-the-ground forestry practices by rewarding businesses, communities and governments that meet standards for sustainability.

Enter the Rainforest Alliance. By encouraging better on-the-ground forestry practices and rewarding businesses, communities and governments that comply with standards for sustainability, we work to meet the ever-increasing demand for forest products. And we do this while protecting soils, waterways and wildlife; ensuring that workers and neighboring communities are treated fairly; and helping forestland retain its economic value over the long term.

The Rainforest Alliance has more than two decades of experience developing environmental and social standards for the sustainable management of natural resources while helping companies and organizations of all sizes adopt sustainable practices.

Central to our sustainable forestry efforts is independent third-party certification, which assures consumers that the wood products they purchase come from well-managed forests. With the launch of SmartWood in 1989, the Rainforest Alliance developed the world's first global forestry certification program and the first to rely on market forces to conserve forests. We are one of the founders of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the most respected standard-setter in the world. We are now the largest FSC-accredited certifier and have certified the greatest number of community and indigenous operations to FSC standards.

In addition to FSC certification, we also offer timber legality verification services to ensure that your wood supply comes from legal sources and verification and validation of forest-based carbon projects under a variety of standards.

Separate from our certification and verification efforts, we help communities and businesses marketing their forest products effective and improve business skills through our Training, Extension, Enterprises and Sourcing (TREES) program. And by promoting green building and encouraging those companies that purchase forest goods to incorporate sustainability into their sourcing policies, our SmartSource program is strengthening the demand for certified products.

Living on the outskirts of Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve in the rural community of El Remate, the Soto family and their neighbors once relied entirely on slash-and-burn agriculture to earn a living. Today, Rolando Soto and his brothers work as skilled carpenters, earning a better income, conserving vital forestland and protecting local biodiversity.
