The Rainforest Alliance in Belize
Sustainable Tourism in Belize

Sustainable Agriculture in Belize
The major agricultural products of Belize include sugar cane, bananas and citrus. The Rainforest Alliance is working to develop and promote sustainable production of these important crops.
Sustainable Forestry in Belize
Forestry is a big industry for little Belize. The Rainforest Alliance has worked with Programme for Belize to certify the sustainable harvesting of timber in their 236,000 acre forest. Diverse tree types in the forest include Billy Webb, Black Cabbage Bark, Breadnut, Bullet Wood, Chicle Macho, Jesmo, Mahogany, Nargusta, Sapodilla and Tzalam.

Integrated Management of Forest Products
In keeping with our vision of increasing the value of Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs), the Rainforest Alliance is working with certified operations in the greater Selva Maya (Mayan Forest of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize). We are helping communities to better their incomes through improved management practices and improved marketing of xate (a small forest palm pronounced "sha-te"). Xate is one of three primary NTFPs found in the Selva Maya forest. Xate is harvested year round and has strong market demand. Eighty percent of the world's supply of xate comes from Mexico and 12% from Guatemala. Work will start on a pilot basis in Guatemala and then be expanded to encompass the greater Selva Maya area, to Mexico and Belize.
