Development of Tourism Certification Initiative in Brazil
A core group of environmental organizations and academic institutions in Brazil have agreed that a certification initiative for sustainable tourism needs to be created as a tool for promoting environmentally and socially sound tourism operations in this country. The Rainforest Alliance has participated in this initiative since its inception by providing direct feedback during the development of certification principles and by keeping this core group of organizations abreast of the latest developments in tourism certification worldwide, including the feasibility study for the creation of an accreditation agency for sustainable tourism certifiers that the Rainforest Alliance is coordinating.
The Rainforest Alliance, WWF-Brazil, SOS Mata Atlantica and IMAFLORA, the organizations leading this initiative, will work to ensure that the expertise achieved in developing sound certification schemes directly benefits this endeavor in Brazil. Specifically, the Rainforest Alliance proposes to undertake the following activities in partnership with the organizations mentioned: analysis of relevant certification schemes to be considered in developing the Brazil initiative; consultation for organizations leading the project; coordination and development of certification standards per region; pilot diagnoses of tourism operations in target sites to field test certification guidelines; design of a monitoring and evaluation system to demonstrate impacts on biodiversity conservation and social well-being; training sessions for providers of tourism services, governmental representatives, auditors and consultants, journalists, and community leaders in target sites; and international marketing efforts.
