Tools for Journalists
Since 1991, Neotropics Communications staff has organized scores of environmental reporting field seminars for hundreds of journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our workshops focus on:
- The basics of good reporting: finding information and writing balanced stories.
- The specific challenges of writing about biodiversity conservation.
- How journalists and conservation groups can work together more effectively.
- Field trips to conservation projects where journalists conduct interviews in order to gain a practical understanding of conservation at work.
See a recent environmental reporting workshop agenda.
For information about organizing a workshop in your area, please contact Melissa Krenke at mkrenke@ra.org.
In 2001, the Neotropics Communications team published the Guía de Periodismo sobre Humedales de Centroamérica (Journalists' Guidebook to the Wetlands of Central America). Available in Spanish only, this 160-page, two-color, illustrated guide provides journalists with information on the significance of wetlands, a descriptive list of important wetlands areas in each Central American country and current threats to these fragile habitats. The guidebook also provides examples of media coverage of wetlands, leads for potential news stories, information on current conservation and research projects, story ideas and names of experts whom reporters can contact for further information.
To receive a free copy of the guide, please contact the Neotropics Communications staff at eco-index@ra.org.
