New York -- Jose Saramago, Nobel prizewinner and one of the most widely read authors in the Portuguese language, has published his new book, As Intermitências da Morte, on paper certified by SmartWood to meet Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. Saramago is the first Nobel laureate to be published on FSC-certified paper.
Saramago, an environmental and social justice activist, first decided to publish the novel on sustainable paper at the urging of Greenpeace International. When Rainforest Alliance partner IMAFLORA learned of this, they suggested FSC-certified paper, which is newly available on the Brazilian market. Greenpeace, Saramago and Geográfica Press (the publisher) readily agreed.
The Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood division and IMAFLORA audited Geográfica Press to ensure that it carried paper that was indeed traceable to FSC-certified forests in Brazil. Their certified paper is made from pulp derived from certified eucalyptus forests owned by the Suzano Company. It is the first book in Latin America to be printed on FSC-certified paper.
More then 1,000 people attended the book launch in Brazil. The first edition will run 30,000 copies. Readers across the country, in bookshops and libraries, will open As Intermitências da Morte and find FSC and Greenpeace logos and the SmartWood seal prominently displayed on the second page.
The Rainforest Alliance congratulates Jose Saramago, IMAFLORA, Greenpeace and Geográfica Press on this laudable team effort.
