Background:

The dozens of research studies cited in the report -- Protecting Our Planet: Redesigning Land-Use and Business Practice -- demonstrate the interdependence of environmental, social and economic sustainability. Smart environmental practices ensure long-term gains in productivity, which in turn strengthen the bottom line. Good labor practices, decent wages and access to healthcare increase workers engagement in any enterprise and reduce turnover. And increased profits brought about by sound environmental and social protocol bolster incentives for farm, forestry and tourism businesses to integrate sustainability into their way of doing business.
