HRH The Prince of Wales to Accept Rainforest Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award

May 12, 2008

The Rainforest Alliance is delighted to announce His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales as the recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2008. This award will be made at the Rainforest Alliance gala, held annually in New York City.

In a prerecorded video acceptance speech, The Prince paid tribute to the work of the Rainforest Alliance.

His Royal Highness said:

"I could not be more honoured to have been chosen for your lifetime achievement award, and I am delighted to accept... I have long greatly admired the work of the Rainforest Alliance. The success you have enjoyed in certifying not just forests, but also sustainable agriculture is really quite remarkable. We all know that the expansion of intensive agriculture is one of the primary drivers of forest degradation, so the work you have done in sustainable coffee, bananas, cocoa and now tea is hugely valuable, proving that biodiversity and livelihoods can be sustained in tandem with commercial profit... It is vital that the impressive growth of the Rainforest Alliance certified stamp of approval, not just here in the United Kingdom but around the world, continues... I send every conceivable good wish for success to the Rainforest Alliance's vital work in the years ahead. Your efforts are as important for the rainforests as they are for the millions of people whose livelihoods they provide."

Tensie Whelan, executive director of the Rainforest Alliance, praised The Prince for his lifelong commitment to sustainable development, saying:

"For decades, The Prince of Wales has been a staunch environmental advocate, devoting his efforts towards conservation, corporate responsibility, the sustainable use of the Earth's resources, and raising awareness of climate change many years before it became an issue of global concern. More recently, he has established his own Rainforests Project and I can think of nobody more deserving of this award than His Royal Highness."

The 2008 Rainforest Alliance Annual Gala takes place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on May 15, 2008, and recognizes exceptional achievements made by individuals and companies in the areas of sustainable agriculture, forestry and tourism.
