Services and Crop Standards in Development
As resources become available, the Rainforest Alliance will continue to adapt standards to include new crops and develop services to better implement certification and strengthen and expand sustainability. Two areas in development include whole farm certification and chain-of-custody certification.
Whole Farm Certification
Farms do not typically grow one crop exclusively. On coffee farms, for instance, it is not unusual to find pineapple, cashews or macadamia nuts. Whole farm certification is designed to assess a farm growing multiple products with the intention of being able to comprehensively label all of them as Rainforest Alliance Certified.
Chain of Custody
Chain-of-custody audits ensure that certified products and non-certified products are segregated from the time that they leave the farm until they reach the consumer. This tracking system verifies that the claim, written or otherwise, of any product bearing the Rainforest Alliance Certified label is accurate.
