The Edinburgh Centre for Tropical Forests has a small Web site focused on forestry and development. Here you can find information related to tropical news, current and past ECTF projects and lessons learned. The ECTF brochure, annual reports and project reports are available in PDF format.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
This site for the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami, Florida includes a virtual herbarium resource containing images for more than 165,000 specimens, a garden planting database, a Florida flora photo gallery, Fairchild Explorer programs for students and teachers and information on Graduate studies in Tropical Plant Biology. The site also has helpful tips for planting and pruning and answers to frequently asked horticulture questions.
Global Volunteer Network
Global Volunteer Network places volunteers in community projects in China, Ecuador, Ghana, Nepal, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Thailand and Uganda. Their vision is to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries through the placement of international volunteers. Volunteer activities include reforestation, wildlife surveys and working with local communities to develop sound agricultural practices. Their Web site has information on these volunteer projects and how you can join.
Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation
ITEC, which has its home office in Gainesville, Florida and operates the Bocas del Toro Biological Station in Panama, offers field ecology courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Information regarding these courses and how to enroll can be found at ITEC’s Web site.
Organization for Tropical Studies
The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) offers courses for undergraduate students, graduate students, professionals and the general public in English, Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to traditional courses in tropical biology, OTS also offers courses and training in conservation biology, environmental policy, and in natural history. OTS maintains 3 Biological Stations in Costa Rica to facilitate research.
