A Fight for Her Forests

For three years, Juana Payaba Cachique, former president of the Tres Islas indigenous community in Peru's Madre de Dios region, put her life on hold to fight for the rights of her people and the sanctity of their land. She would do it again in a heartbeat. "As leaders, we have to think about the future and our children," she explains. "We can't think about ourselves."
