World Travel Mart is the international travel industry's premier business-to-business forum with over 5,000 leading suppliers and 44,000 industry professionals from over 190 countries. Entrepreneurs from Barbados, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, South Africa and the United Kingdom explained how they have incorporated environmentally and socially responsible practices into their tourism operations through their participation in independent certification programs. The International Ecotourism Society and the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics of the United Nations Environment Programme also participated.

World Tourism Organization Regional Conference of the Americas

One of the objectives of this conference was to encourage a permanent dialogue and cooperation among national tourism authorities, certification systems representatives, tourism service providers, and tourism associations with the goal of achieving a consistent set of standards in the field.
The first Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas was launched in the context of this conference, gathering representatives of leading certification programs in the region and other collaborative organizations to exchange experiences and define common objectives.

This event marked the launch of a long term partnership between the Rainforest Alliance, The International Ecotourism Society, the Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development and the United Nations Environment Programme in association with the World Tourism Organization. The partnership seeks to find the best tools for promoting exemplary practices and certification of sustainable tourism, as well as helping governments and other institutions establish policies to promote sustainable tourism.
