Sumaq, a Quechua word meaning “beautiful and pleasant”, was chosen as the name to capture the essence and concept of Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel -- a unique hotel in terms of comfort and haute cuisine, with authentic architecture and a warm atmosphere inspired by the Inca culture.

Nestled at the foot of the Machu Picchu archeological site and along the banks of the Vilcanota River, Sumaq is the ideal place to commune with nature.

Machu Picchu is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site and is home to 42 unique species of plants and animals. It has more than 2,300 plant species, of which the best known are the beautiful orchids and other native plants such as the “llama llama” plant (Oreacallis grandiflora), the "Atiso" and the intimpa (Podocarpus glomeratus). There are more than 500 species of animals, including the "ucumari" or spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and 420 bird species.

Due to its privileged location, Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel is an ideal place to enjoy a deep connection with culture and nature. We offer Peruvian cooking and bar classes, Pachamanca cooking classes, ecological walks and traditional ceremonies such as the "Payment to Mother Earth: Pachamama" and "Arac Masin" or Andean marriage.

Sumaq 60 luxury suites and sophisticated leisure areas, recently updated and inspired by the ancient past of the Incas mixed with natural and modern elements.

Making a Difference

Number of Employees:
Percentage of local employees:

Our staff and guests help us be good stewards of water, electricity, and plants and animals of the Machu Picchu sanctuary. More than 70% of our employees are from the local area. We currently have partnerships with social organizations such as the chef’s alliance (Alianza Cocinero), with the NGO Acción Contra el Hambre and the Clinton Foundation.

Practices at Sumaq are based on the three pillars of sustainability:

  • Social: we continually provide educational materials in the community, organize cultural events and actively participate in community events near Aguas Calientes.
  • Economic: we have implemented sustainable policies based on local laws and regulations, with the goal of improving the company’s management.
  • Environmental: we involve our guests in activities such as the Andean marriage ceremony and ritual payment to the Earth, and in the conservation of local traditions.
