In honor of World Water Week, we’re highlighting how Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms minimize erosion and safeguard waterways. Certified farms not only manage buffer zones on their property, but also treat wastewater and implement water conservation practices and other safeguards – proving that clean, healthy waterways can coexist with economically viable working landscapes. Rainforest Alliance Certified farms promote healthy ecosystems, which can help to strengthen and secure supply chains.
In the vibrant country of Rwanda, while coffee is plentiful, safe drinking water isn’t. Many communities rely on rivers and streams to drink, wash, clean, farm, and play. When coffee farming is done responsibly with wastewater treatment systems like those at Rainforest Alliance Certified washing stations, it can mean clean water and healthy rivers, which is great for communities downstream and for the coffee supply chain.
