Chocolate in its many forms is a favorite treat all year and around the world, but there are seasonal spikes in sales. According to Candy Industry magazine, Valentine’s Day (February 14) is the third best holiday in the U.S. for chocolate sales, after Christmas and Easter, but ahead of Halloween. In 2017, the global chocolate market was valued at around US$103.28 billion in revenue and by 2024 is expected to hit US$161.56 billion. During this forecast period Europe will continue to hold a significant portion of the market, with North America and Asia Pacific expected to have the fastest growth.
On Valentine’s Day and every day, it is important to remember the people behind the chocolate – particularly the cocoa farmers, but also the companies committed to sustainably sourced cocoa, and the numerous partners that work with the Rainforest Alliance all along the supply chain, in regions as diverse as Indonesia, Colombia, and West Africa. We recognize that there remain serious challenges in the cocoa sector, and we continue to work intensively to actively address these along with our many allies. Our efforts are aimed at making the cocoa sector more sustainable for all concerned. Certification is a driving force for improvement and builds sector momentum on key sustainability priorities. At the same time, the road to greater sustainability is a long one – and there are many more steps to be taken. This requires that all relevant actors along the supply chain – certification systems, companies, producers, government and civil society – work together. We need to develop a long-term strategy to further improve the lives of thousands of cocoa farmers
As part of these efforts we continue to drive technological solutions such as SAT4Farming satellite technology. While the many sector actors work to identify innovative solutions and drive change, there are stories of positive impact we can share and celebrate, such as those of cocoa farmers in the Juaboso-Bia area of Ghana and South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
