The Rainforest Alliance 2020 Certification Program was published in June 2020 and includes the new standard, assurance system and related data and technology systems. The program has been designed to deliver more value to the many people and businesses around the world that use Rainforest Alliance certification as an essential tool to support sustainable agricultural production and supply chains.
As the Rainforest Alliance is a full member and founder of ISEAL, the 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Standard was developed in accordance with the ISEAL Standard Setting Code of Good Practice. This ensured that the Standard is relevant, accessible, and reflects a balance of stakeholder interests.
We ensured that the process of development was transparent, and that all relevant stakeholders had the opportunity to provide inputs. Between December 2018 and August 2019, two public consultations on the standard were held to gather feedback on the requirements.
The first public stakeholder consultation took place from December 2018 until February 2019. The summary of findings can be found here. The draft standard was adjusted and improved upon based on the first round of feedback. The second public stakeholder consultation took place between June 2019 and September 2019. A summary of the feedback of can be found here.
During these two consultation rounds Rainforest Alliance received input from more than 1,000 people in nearly 50 countries, representing over 200 organizations, from farmers, companies, NGOs, governments and research institutes.
The new Certification Program is based on the principle of continuous learning and improvement. We will apply this principle to the development of our standard and our certification system. In the coming years, adaptations and improvements will be introduced on a regular basis, based on data and learnings from implementation and feedback from stakeholders.
The 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Standard and related Assurance documents are currently undergoing a small technical revision for corrections and language clarifications. Version 1.1 will be published in January 2021.
In accordance with ISEAL requirements, the next full revision of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard will occur in 2025 to ensure the continued relevance and effectiveness of the standard. This will include a public stakeholder consultation and other outreach activities.
