Position summary:

The Accountant is a key member of the Honduras Field Office Administration team. Working closely with Country Manager, Finance & Accounting in headquarters and the Latin-American Region (HQ F&A), the Guatemala Accounting team and the Honduras team, s/he will work to ensure the integrity of the Rainforest Alliance’s financial operations in all local offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adequate fiscal, legal and financial compliance, tax laws compliance to prepare and submit the reports required by several government entities, in close coordination with F&A, Country Manager and Accounting - Guatemala;
  • Review and send the monthly accounting report of the field office (FOAR) in a timely manner to Accounting-Guatemala;
  • Review and coordinate with the Administration Coordination, Country Manager and the Accounting - Guatemala the monthly payroll;
  • To guarantee, in coordination with the Local Human Resources and the Country Manager, compliance with labor legislation related to payroll;
  • Comply with headquarters’ Global Policies & Procedures (P&Ps) (including government, tax laws, accounting and legal requirements) under the direction of the Accounting – Guatemala team and HQ F&A, implement and monitor internal controls in accordance with our P&Ps and provide related training;
  • Identify areas where local P&Ps may be necessary and bring to attention of H&Q F&A to determine if a local policy is necessary;
  • Prepare and send the cash flow from the country and coordinate with program staff (program and project managers) to estimate the cash flow;
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the local accounting system and ensure the correctly month/year closing process and generate the Financial Statements for country and by Cost Center or Projects;
  • Ensure the correct coding and registration of information by accountant and financial information;
  • Check that the personnel expenses are consistent with the correct application of the expense policy.
  • Provide information and coordinate the preparation as required by external, project-specific audits and/or the headquarters of the Rainforest Alliance;
  • Review and prepare the payments as appropriate: reports of travel expenses, invoices, payments, advances and accounts receivable; entries them in the books company;
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports as necessary;
  • Provide support to other field offices as necessary; and
  • Prepare the monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Inform and provide the corresponding alerts to minimize risks to the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting or Finance;
  • 5-7 years relevant experience in similar positions; non-profit sector experience a plus;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting system software and Excel;
  • Detail, deadline and solution-oriented;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; English a plus;
  • Willingness to travel domestically between local offices;
  • Experience in a global work environment and/or international nonprofit organization preferred; and
  • Ability to work successfully with employees from diverse backgrounds.
     

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
