Position summary:

The Director of Standards & Assurance manages the Standard & Assurance department and is responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the Rainforest Alliance while also maximizing its impact. The director is responsible for the development of a new certification standard and oversees its implementation worldwide, working with other departments and teams in producing countries. The director will also play a leading role in “Re-imagining Certification”, which is one of Rainforest Alliance’s core interventions to innovate certification and increase our impact.   

The Standards & Assurance department consists of approximately 30 people, two thirds based in Amsterdam and one third in other regions (US, Latin America, Africa, and Asia). The department is structured into units that are managed and/or coordinated by managers/unit leads reporting directly to this position.

Responsibilities:

Standards and Certification

  • Develop and maintain the multi-stakeholder sustainable agriculture standard
  • Develop all crop and region-specific interpretations and guidance
  • Content ownership over certification-relevant training materials
  • Coordinate the Rainforest Alliance Standards Committee
  • Quality assurance of all certification processes
  • Cultivation of sustainable agriculture standard and certification-related partnerships

Assurance Oversight

  • Oversight and execution of the Certification Body (CB) Management Program
  • Content ownership over CB training programs
  • Oversight and execution of the CB monitoring program

Chain of Custody Standard

  • Development and maintenance of the Chain of Custody Standard(s)
  • Quality assurance of the Chain of Custody certifications
  • Collaboration with IT and Markets colleagues on Chain of Custody aspects

Management

  • Manages the department on a day-to-day basis
  • Monitors the progress, continuity, and effectiveness of the department
  • Ensures an adequate staffing level
  • Performs evaluation, performance, coaching, and staff development meetings with direct reports
  • Ensures proper cooperation and working atmosphere within the team
  • Facilitates good collaboration of Standards & Assurance staff in cross-departmental working groups
  • Ensures effective collaboration with regional staff

Departmental Leading

  • Reports important internal and external trends, achievements, and challenges to appropriate Leadership Team member(s)
  • Actively collaborates with other department heads on Rainforest Alliance’s re-imagining certification strategy
  • Translates the strategic direction and organizational objectives into Standards & Assurance (multi-year) workplans and goals
  • Oversees the development, implementation, execution of, and compliance with all S&A policies and programs
  • Manages the annual department budget
  • Addresses challenging certification situations in collaboration with the Legal department
  • Leads and supports staff in grievances and appeal procedures related to Standards & Assurance
  • Represents Rainforest Alliance at customer meetings

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in agronomy, environmental science, international development, or related;
  • At least 10 years of working experience, preferably in CSR or rural development related roles;
  • Strong people manager with proven track record and at least 7 years of experience in managing multi-faceted teams; experience in managing international teams strongly preferred;
  • Open minded and excels in a constantly changing environment
  • Positive and pro-active
  • Outstanding communications, team-building, and strategic thinking skills;
  • Fluent verbal and written communication skills in English, preferably good knowledge of Spanish and/or French;
  • Strong interest in sustainability and voluntary standards systems;
  • Passionate commitment to the Rainforest Alliance’s mission and values.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
