Position summary:

The Global Lead Sustainable Forest Management advises and supports our strategy on sustainable forest management. He/she will work to partner with and support Rainforest Alliance regional teams in Asia, Africa and Latin America to:

  1. Demonstrate the social, ecological and economic viability of sustainable forest management activities in Rainforest Alliance priority landscapes, especially those that are community led;
  2. Improve governance, forest management and enterprise administration capacities among partner communities and smallholder forest enterprises;
  3. Serve as the technical lead on issues related to sustainable forest management and support field projects and teams across the regions and programmes.

He/she will also work closely with regional counterparts working on community forest enterprise development, helping to further expand Community Forest Enterprises within the priority landscapes.

The Global Lead Sustainable Forest Management will be part of the Environment team where he/she will work together with the Global Leads on Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change, and a team of other experts supporting Rainforest Alliance globally. Responsibilities will include supporting a number of new and ongoing projects in Cameroon, Democratic Republic Congo, Guatemala, Indonesia and Mexico that aim to protect forests with high biodiversity value and provide important environmental or cultural services through increased forest governance and economic value of the forests to communities. The focus is on co-management of protected areas with local communities and indigenous people, promoting the rational and sustainable use of natural resources in and outside protected areas by local communities while ensuring sustainability.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage in thought leadership, advocacy, strategy development, global engagement and leadership;
  • Ensure strategic ambitions are embedded in sector, regional and advocacy strategies and that they are consistently applied across the organization;
  • Support of the regions with regional strategy, project development and implementation and developing technical capacity on priority themes;
  • Together with the Markets team (Tailored Programs), engage and support companies in the development and implementation of thematic strategies;
  • Provide technical advice, evidence and lessons learned and feed back across the organization to regions, supply chains, markets, re-imaging certification and communications;
  • Provide input and guidance to donor and partnerships development;
  • Ensure continuous learning, knowledge management, coordination of communities of practices, awareness raising and technical capacity building across the organization;
  • In coordination with advocacy and partnerships teams, represent the organization at events and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • At least a master’s degree or equivalent degree in forestry, natural resources management, or related field; Ph.D. a plus
  • A minimum of 10 years professional experience in program and project development, with demonstrated field forestry experience developing impactful, innovative field programs in sustainability, preferably in a developing country with strong field experience in community-based forest management, agroforestry or natural forest management or forest conservation and restoration;
  • Experience in advocating with governments, companies and/or civil society on issues related to sustainability standards certification or similar;
  • Experience in fundraising, including the design of complex proposals and projects, with bilateral or multilateral donor agencies and company partnerships;
  • Strong organizational skills and efficient management of multiple tasks and priorities
  • Strong writing capacity, including the ability to write for a diverse set of audiences, including local stakeholders, development practitioners, donors and the general public.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
