Position summary:

The Senior Associate, Institutional Relations, Africa is responsible for the writing and editing of concept documents, proposals and reports to high-level funders. S/he maintains effective communication with Rainforest Alliance staff based in other geographies and contributes to overall fundraising strategy for the organization’s work in Africa.  S/he will also play a role in proactively identifying new funding sources and advancing key donor discussions in Kenya and other African countries.  The focus of this position will be institutional donors, specifically foundations, bilateral and multilateral funders with a presence in Kenya and other African geographies.  The Senior Associate, Institutional Relations, Africa works closely with the Regional Leads in Africa on regional fundraising priorities, as well as with Institutional Relations colleagues and technical staff, to compose strong written products for external use.


  • Secure long-term financing for regional programming by writing high-priority, high-impact concepts and proposals for institutional funders;
  • For selected institutional funding applications, manage the proposal development process, including development of workplans and coordination and participation in technical design workshops to support proposal development, as needed;
  • Proactively pursue, develop and maintain institutional relationships with selected donors based in Africa, serving as a key point of contact between them and Africa-focused project teams to realize Rainforest Alliance’s regional ambitions, owning responsibility for the progress of appropriate follow up actions;
  • Serve as a point of contact between the Institutional Relations team, based globally, and technical staff based in Africa, coordinating and liaising with both on a daily basis;
  • Support development of reports for selected institutional donors, ensuring consistency with funder requirements and high level of content and language quality;
  • Proactively identify new institutional funding resources consistent with the organization’s strategy, ambition and revenue targets, working closely with the Regional Leads and Senior Manager Institutional Relations to do so;
  • Build awareness by representing Rainforest Alliance at relevant conferences and events;
  • Maintain accurate donor information in donor database;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


  • Master’s degree in International Business Administration, Project Management, Natural Resources Management or any relate field
  • Minimum of ten years of professional work experience, with at least five years’ experience in institutional fundraising;
  • Must have excellent English and French business writing skills and be able to create content for different audiences;
  • Experience working with budgets and financial reports;
  • Ability to connect with funders and project implementers in an international context on conservation and certification issues;
  • Thorough knowledge of natural resource management and/or agriculture commodity production or trade and/or development themes in the region is strongly preferred;
  • Fluency in English and French; Swahili is a plus;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as be an effective team member;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Able to work well under tight deadlines and with colleagues in different time zones;
  • Experience in a fast-paced work environment, preferably within a global organization;
  • Strong research and computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, project management systems);
  • Willingness and availability to travel up to 20% of time.
