Project summary:

The Sub Regional Lead will lead sub regional strategic planning in Southern Africa. She/he will focus on supporting the sectors that have a RA certification footprint in the subregion’s countries. She/he will represent the organization from ground level farmer trainings and certification support to board room meetings with key partners and companies.

She/he will connect staff and stakeholders in mainly sub region and main offices. She/he will build a sub regional team (on topics and themes) with relevant expertise spread over different countries in the sub region, and apply a participatory and inclusive management style. This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Builds the sub regional strategy and guides country representatives and program officers to design and implement country strategies
  • Ensures code is effective in sector transformation
  • Provides sub regional leadership.
  • Guides staff on work collaboration and on growth in sector
  • Selects/ hires country representative and other staff as necessary, together with Director, Africa.
  • Act as member support lead in South Africa
  • Delegates and shares supervisory responsibilities
  • Engages with other sub regional leads in West, Central and East on key topics and strategic interventions. Learns from other activities in the region.
  • Engages relevant departments by offering relevant information on context and requests support from specific departments to improve program interventions.
  • Engages and cooperates on major sustainability issues with main private and public sector actors, as well as government at sub regional and national levels
  • Makes sure that a good relationship is maintained with key companies in the subregion and buying from the subregion e.g. Twinings, Unilever, Tata, Tescos’, Rooibos Ltd, JDE, etc. Engages with the market team if there are opportunities for projects in the sourcing areas for these companies
  • Assures that any key issues with the standards and assurance of the program are communicated in good time to the relevant departments.
  • Engages with other sustainability initiatives in the region to work on common goals.
  • Ensures that certificate holders in countries in the region remain supported as necessary (needs assessment). This includes South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, Lesotho

Qualifications:

  • Masters’ in agriculture and/or management or other relevant field
  • 10 years’ experience in similar management position in Southern Africa
  • Understanding of at least some of the main commodities in the sub region i.e. tea, rooibos, fruit and coffee
  • Private sector work experience in company, e.g. as sustainability manager
  • Project cycle experience
  • Project management, budgeting and planning
  • People management
  • Being able to speak/communicate in Afrikaans

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.

Notes:

Only candidates authorized to work in South Africa will be considered. This position requires to travel at least once a month.
