Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic has on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we managed to eliminate over 57% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning one in every two items will not be sent to landfill or pollute our environment.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba has changed all plastic water bottles into glass bottles and plastic straws into paper straws. Furthermore, we train, direct and guide our associates to carry out proper waste separation and better understand the importance of correct classification. In addition, our aim is to restore the natural environment, whilst raising awareness of climate change through tree-planting events, around the area in which we operate. Also, we created a seedlings program. This program is created to nurture young people at risk of social exclusion, providing vocational, life and education skills in order to prepare them for a work environment and the adventure called life. This programme improves the long-term prosperity of communities by strengthening the capacities of young people in order to offer opportunities to develop their potential through tutorials and scholarships.

Supporting long-term societal prosperity is fundamental to Banyan Tree’s ability to create value for local communities and this is achieved by empowering them through jobs creation, education, supporting artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travelers to local culture and heritage.Furthermore, we aim to organize a minimum of four cleaning activities each year in order to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment. Finally, Banyan Tree Mayakoba provides support to endangered marine turtles and create awareness campaigns with guests and associates. We also invite guests to be part of our turtle releases at the beach.
