Now Sapphire maintains socially responsible practices on the resort and in our local community. Our family of collaborators supports the El Delirio Mayan community in Puerto Morelos by donating school supplies and toys. We also work to prevent childhood obesity and the exploitation of children in Quintana Roo.
We recently implemented an integrated waste management program, as part of our commitment to reducing, treating, and safely disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. Now Sapphire has recovered and recycled more than 34 tons of materials that would otherwise have ended up in the municipal landfill. We avoided 369 tons of food waste by recycling compost and providing livestock food. Sixteen tons of paper and cardboard, 13 tons of plastic, and 6 tons of metals were recycled. Now Sapphire also planted 40 trees in Reserva Toh.
Our restaurants never serve any meals that include any shark species. We continually support the conservation of sharks with programs like the “Saving Our Sharks” association, and through monthly donations to wild shark population research. Through our support of the Sierra Gorda A.C. conservation organization, we reduce our carbon footprint by reforesting the Sierra Gorda forest in the state of Queretaro.
We also have continuous training on climate change, separation of hazardous waste, and we work closely with environmental experts and the government to reduce our impact on the environment.
