One of the leading bodies in conservation and sustainable agriculture, the Rainforest Alliance entreats the Trump Administration to reconsider its stance on the Paris Agreement. After this morning’s news that Syria plans to sign the Paris Agreement, the United States is now the only country in the world to reject the international accord to act on climate change.
Rainforest Alliance President Nigel Sizer says waiting for an agreement that is “more favorable” to American interests is missing the forest for the trees.
“The Trump Administration says it will revisit its decision when the terms of the Paris Agreement become more favorable to the U.S. This statement demonstrates a lack of understanding of how climate change affects the globe. Americans are already feeling the effects of climate change. Just ask a peach farmer in Georgia, or a firefighter in the Pacific Northwest,” Sizer says. “Forget that the outsized American consumption of fossil fuels has directly contributed to climate change through greenhouse gas pollution, and impacted the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. Do the megafires, major hurricanes, and severe drought the U.S. experienced this summer signify nothing?”
Despite claims that the Paris Agreement does not work for America, refusing to act to reduce the effects of climate change will impact Americans everywhere. Rising sea levels, more intense and more frequent weather events, crop failures, and negative public health effects have all been linked to climate change, which scientists agree is caused by human activity.
Though an American exit from the Paris Agreement would not formally take place until 2020, the Trump Administration’s move does not reflect the views of the American people right now—70% of Americans believe global warming is happening at this moment.
The Rainforest Alliance will continue its commitment to reduce the effects of climate change by building climate resilience in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions through forest conservation and sustainable agriculture.
