What Does It Mean to Adopt-A-Rainforest?
Your donation will be used to support the purchase or management of a protected area in the country you have selected. In most cases, new parcels of land are not continuously available for purchase. Our partners will use funds raised through the Adopt-A-Rainforest project to buy land when it is available. If no appropriate land is available, your donation may be used to support ongoing management activities that are crucial to the area's conservation, such as:
- Hiring, training and equipping park rangers;
- Conducting environmental education programs for people living in neighboring communities;
- Promoting environmentally and socially desirable enterprises in the area surrounding the park (to create a buffer zone for wildlife); and
- Maintaining ranger stations and other park facilities.
Who Will Own and Manage the Land?
The Rainforest Alliance believes our local partners are best suited to promote sound conservation in their communities. The land is owned by our partner organization in each country -- registered environmental not-for-profit organizations with a commitment to protecting forests. The land is either added to a private reserve owned by our partner, or is donated to the national park service for inclusion into a national park. We monitor the conservation programs we support, but our local partners carry them out.
What Does My Certificate Signify?
Your certificate is our way of acknowledging your donation to a very important conservation project. The certificate does not signify ownership of the land. It only is a reminder of the important contribution that you have made to protect one of the world's most precious resources.
How Were the Adopt-A-Rainforest Projects Selected?
The Adopt-A-Rainforest projects were carefully selected from the many that are underway in tropical countries. Our selection criteria include the following: a vital need for the project to exist; competent project staff and management; a good chance of success, and operating methods that are easy to replicate. The projects we choose are carefully planned and efficient -- the only thing they lack is sufficient financial support.
What Will Happen to My Donation?
The Rainforest Alliance will keep donations in an audited bank account. Whenever donations for a specific project accumulate to $2,000 (or after six months, whichever comes first), we will send a check to the managing organization. Twenty percent is kept to help pay for administration and program selection/monitoring.
How Can I Learn More About the Project I've Chosen to Support?
From time to time, we will provide updates on Adopt-A-Rainforest projects on our Web site as well as in The Canopy, the newsletter sent to all members of the Rainforest Alliance. If you need further information on a specific project, call the Rainforest Alliance at (212) 677-1900.
Are There Other Worthy Projects to Support?
Absolutely. Each year hundreds of children, adults and community associations do awareness-raising campaigns, letter writing initiatives, performances and fundraisers to tell people about how important these places are for wildlife and communities.
