Position Summary: 

The Accounting Associate will be a member of the Mexico Field Office Administration team. Working closely with the Senior Accountant, Mexico and the Accounting Manager, Mexico, s/he will work to ensure the integrity of the Rainforest Alliance’s financial operations in all Mexican offices.

Responsibilities: 

Compliance and Controls

  • Work closely with the Senior Accountant to update and/or improve policies and standards as needed;
  • Maintain advances and inventory lists; and
  • Assist Senior Accountant in reconciliation of Mexican intra-office records with Finance & Administration headquarters (HQ F&A).

Banking

  • Process approved check requests and prepare checks for signature; and
  • Perform monthly bank statement reconciliations.

General Accounting

  • Work with Senior Accountant to serve as a general resource for field office administration staff on matters related to bookkeeping and general administration in accordance with Rainforest Alliance policies;
  • Manage the day-to-day reception of accounting documents;
  • Support Senior Accountant in the administration of office expenses and office expense budgets for the Oaxaca office and also for other Rainforest Alliance Mexico offices;
  • Review Travel Expense Reports (TER);
  • Support the preparation of bank reconciliations and review and check backup documents for petty cash;
  • Process and reconcile advances, process payment requests, invoices, petty cash requests and other expense transactions, validate backup documentation;
  • Assist the preparation of project specific audits;
  • Compile data for field office accounting report (FOAR) submission;
  • Prepare journal entries; and
  • Assist in ensuring correct coding and recording of information.

Financial Reporting

  • Assist the preparation of financial reports for a variety of internal and external purposes including local accounting reports, requests for reimbursement to donors, reports for HQ F&A, and ad-hoc reports as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance or a related field;
  • 1-3 years relevant experience; non-profit sector experience a plus;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting system software and Excel;
  • Detail, deadline and solution-oriented;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Fluent in English, written and verbal; and
  • Ability to work successfully with employees from diverse backgrounds.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
