Forestry Communities and Ejidos: Mexico
Forestry communities and ejidos in Mexico are on the front lines of conservation efforts in this megabiodiverse country. Many ejidos, like Ejido La Ciudad, have led the way in demonstrating how communities can manage their forests more sustainably for the betterment of both the environment and their livelihoods. Ejido La Ciudad collaborated with the Rainforest Alliance to sharpen their management and enterprise skills so that their forests can continue to contribute to protecting the environment and improving members' quality of life. These efforts are supported by the Mexico Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) and other federal and state agencies; Reforestamos Mexico, a Mexican foundation; the Inter-American Development Bank -- Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN-BID); and the Global Environmental Facility with the United Nations Development Program.
The Rainforest Alliance works with ejidos and communities across Mexico to assist them in building more competitive enterprises while protecting biodiversity and improving social conditions.
