La producción de banano tiene una historia controversial, particularmente cuando se trata de prácticas laborales y degradación ambiental. Si bien ha habido muchas mejoras en las últimas décadas, los sindicatos y las ONG continúan reportando preocupaciones, incluyendo que los bajos salarios en las plantaciones son insuficientes para que los trabajadores y sus familias alcancen un nivel de vida digno. Si bien la situación salarial no es exclusiva del sector bananero, ni de Costa Rica y Belice, los socios del proyecto, no obstante, reconocen la importancia del living wage para la salud de las comunidades y las cadenas de suministro de banano. Por esta razón, Fyffes, la Iniciativa de Comercio Sostenible de IDH, otras entidades privadas y Rainforest Alliance se han unido para financiar y respaldar las estimaciones de living wages para Costa Rica y Belice, para comprender las brechas entre estos y los salarios actuales, y trabajar con las fincas participantes en el desarrollo de herramientas de monitoreo y estrategias y planes piloto para mejorar la compensación de los trabajadores.

Junto con la Global Living Wage Coalition (GLWC) y con aportes clave de representantes del sector bananero, que incluyen CORBANA, plantaciones y organizaciones de trabajadores, estamos trabajando para finalizar dos estudios de referencia (benchmarks) de living wage, uno para Costa Rica y otro para Belice. Estos estudios de referencia cubrirán las regiones de cada país donde se encuentra la mayor producción de banano. Es nuestra intención que estos estudios de referencia sirvan como herramientas útiles para los trabajadores, así como para los administradores o propietarios de plantaciones, además de facilitar el diálogo sobre los salarios y el valor compartido en el sector bananero y más allá. El evento de validación para el estudio de referencia de Costa Rica se llevó a cabo en septiembre del 2017 y la versión final del estudio se publicará en el julio del 2018. El estudio de referencia del living wage en Belice se encuentra actualmente en curso.

Ocho fincas piloto, cuatro en cada país, se ofrecieron como voluntarias para trabajar con los socios del proyecto en comprender mejor cómo se comparan sus salarios con los índices de living wage, y juntos abordar las brechas salariales, si estas se dieran. Las discusiones entre las fincas y los socios del proyecto ya han sido muy útiles para ayudar a todas las partes a comprender la complejidad de los modelos de compensación y a ayudar a los interesados a desarrollar mejores herramientas para facilitar el diálogo sobre el valor compartido. Estas fincas también brindan retroalimentación crítica a Rainforest Alliance que ayudará con el aprendizaje y la administración adaptativa de los criterios de living wage, capacitación y orientación dentro de su sistema de certificación, en sus programas a nivel de paisaje productivo y en su trabajo de incidencia. La Norma de Rainforest Alliance para Agricultura Sostenible incluye el living wage en sus requerimientos de sostenibilidad desde 2017.
