Senior Communications Associate, CNCG -- Communications, Marketing & Education Division
The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. The Climate, Nature and Communities in Guatemala (CNCG) Project will assist in the development of a process to mitigate the impacts of climate change in Guatemala -- improving management of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity, building institutional and technical capacity, and strengthening the policy and legal framework necessary for the country to respond to climate change. The project will strengthen the capacity of local organizations to address biodiversity, forest conservation and sustainable land management and address issues related to food security, adaptation, environmental certification, income-generating opportunities, and low emissions development strategies.
The Senior Communications Associate, CNCG will be responsible for the development, management and implementation of activities to effectively deliver the communications strategy of the CNCG Project. This position will serve to raise awareness about CNCG project goals, objectives and benefits among key public and private stakeholder groups, emphasizing raising education and awareness among forest communities; comprehensive media outreach and publicity; and supporting project partners to share information on core project components. This position will require close coordination with staff from multiple Rainforest Alliance divisions and amongst various project partners, in particular the CNCG Chief of Party.
Communications Strategy and Planning
- Develop and lead implementation of the CNCG communications strategy to share our vision and to communicate the achievements of the core objectives (policy, capacity building, finance, and MRV) of the CNCG project;
- Coordinate closely with the Guatemala government to produce consistent communications through effective protocols;
- Create and lead the media outreach strategy to promote CNCG accomplishments among key audiences;
- Develop in coordination with technical staff effective yearly work plan for implementing the communications strategy;
Communications Outreach, Publicity, and Media
- Oversee effective documentation and promotion of CNCG work through photos, video, and other media;
- Research, draft content and edit public promotional materials and publications (printed and electronic) in Spanish for key external audiences, such as brochures, fact sheets, posters and websites;
- Edit and coordinate CNCG internal reports, project case studies, and other written materials in Spanish, including regular donor reporting on CNCG activities in the field;
- Coordinate the design and production of materials to be published such as fact sheets, brochures, digital publications, etc.;
- Manage the addition of all appropriate project information¸ products and materials to the online CNCG Pathway and promote this resource to stakeholders;
- Field to appropriate project staff and respond to requests from the media, key stakeholders, CNCG staff and the public about CNCG work in a timely manner;
- Coordinate media events, media trips, and communications staff travel;
- Accompany journalists on field trips to CNCG project areas;
- Coordinate translations of CNCG information as needed;
- Collect, write, edit and publish project information on the CNCG website;
- Write content for the CNCG blog and promote on CNCG communications channels;
- Promote and monitor CNCG program presence on external websites;
- Monitor and participate in sustainable forestry online communities to identify and alert colleagues about new opportunities;
- Coordinate with Education team on educational campaigns to reach out to forest dependent communities, with a focus on women and youth;
Management and Administration
- Ensure that communications protocols developed for CNCG are understood and followed by project partners;
- Prepare periodic progress reports and updates for internal use;
- Participate in site visits to understand the implementation of CNCG strategies and programs; and
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications or journalism;
- 5 - 7 years work experience in journalism, communications, and/or media outreach;
- Demonstrated knowledge of biodiversity conservation, sustainable rural development, and REDD+ issues and ability to convey technical information to general audiences;
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet, Photoshop, HTML, etc);
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in Spanish; strong skills in spoken and written English;
- Knowledge of the publication process (print and digital);
- Outstanding photography and videotaping skills;
- Experience in blogging and/or other Web 2.0 realms;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals;
- Ability to work within a team structure as well as independently, be creative, take initiative, be attentive to detail, be able to work well under deadlines; and
- Ability to travel a minimum of 30 percent per year, nationally and internationally.
