Deforestation vs. Forest Degradation—What Is the Difference and Why Does It Matter?
Everyone knows that “deforestation” and “forest degradation” present massive threats to people and nature, but what exactly do these terms mean?
If you’re an operator or trader selling coffee and cocoa (or derived products like chocolate) to EU markets, or exporting them from the EU, then under the EUDR you need to prove they are deforestation free.
By 30 December 2025, you need to show that these products do not originate from land deforested after December 31, 2020. You’ll need to provide evidence to the national competent authorities of your due diligence process, including relevant information about your supply chain such as geodata and risk assessments.
