Standards for Farm Audits

The Sustainable Agriculture Standard covers the environmental, social, labor and agronomic management of farms that cultivate crops included in the Farm Certification Policy of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). In 2008, the SAN International Standards Committee and technical teams led a public consultation process, which resulted in the publication of two documents:

  • Sustainable Agriculture Standard, April 2009 version
  • SAN Addendum -- Additional SAN Criteria

The Addendum was originally designed to enable the implementation of best practices on oil palm, sugarcane and soy plantations. It strengthens the SAN's definition of ecosystem and landscape conservation, energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and land use rights. Both documents currently form the basis of audits for farms growing these crops.

Because the Addendum covers new issues for sustainable agriculture, it will not be binding for audits on all crops until January 2011. Read the Implementation Policy.

Learn more about why the SAN prohibits genetically modified crops on Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms.
