For many, Earth Day is little more than that one day a year when their Instagram feed fills with nature-themed posts and corporate sustainability pledges. But if you’re reading this, we know that you get that Earth Day is so much more than that. Still, you might be surprised by its history—and the power this day holds to spark true transformation.
Discover its activist origins and ideas for how to make Earth Day 2026—and every day—truly count.
What is Earth Day, and when is it?
Every year on April 22, people around the world come together to take action for the planet. The first Earth Day took place in 1970 and is widely considered the start of the modern environmental movement. While Indigenous Peoples have long been natural stewards of the land, by the late 1960s, the industrialized world had strayed far from our roots. Pollution was rampant, and a massive oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California in 1969 galvanized public outrage.
Activists in the US responded by organizing nationwide events that brought together 20 million Americans. That show of unity led to lasting change, including the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and landmark legislation like the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

Earth Day 2026 activities to do today and every day
More than 50 years later, our planet faces even greater challenges: accelerating climate change, deforestation, and record biodiversity loss. But if Earth Day’s origins teach us anything, it’s that the antidote to despair is action.
Each April 22—and every day in between—is a chance to refocus our energy and channel collective power toward a more sustainable future. Ready to get started? Here are some simple yet impactful ways to make a difference.
It starts at home: Easy lifestyle changes that make a real impact
While the onus of climate action shouldn’t rest solely on individuals, the way we vote, shop, and speak up shapes policies and signals to companies what we value. Individual actions might seem small, but they add up, especially when millions of us take them together.

Better together: Fun community activities
Taking care of the planet doesn’t have to feel like a chore. In fact, it can be the perfect excuse to connect with your community or finally see those friends you’ve been meaning to catch up with.

Brain gain: Learn and educate
Many of us have a surface-level understanding of the issues facing our planet (which is already a great start!), but why not take a moment to dig a little deeper and turn awareness into real understanding?

Earth Day: An ongoing call to action
Earth Day began as a movement—and it’s one we are still carrying forward today. April 22 is a powerful reminder that every mindful choice we make helps shape a healthier, more sustainable planet.
