What We Do
We understand that we can’t preserve resources in a vacuum. We can’t stop people from using wood or planting food, and we can’t prevent them from living in ecologically fragile areas. So rather than preservation, our approach is conservation through better land management. We work around the world to make farming, forestry and travel more environmentally and socially friendly.
How do we do it? By helping communities that derive their living from the land adopt our scientifically established methods of responsible land management. These methods lead to the sustainability and long-term health of the environment and wildlife, while ensuring that workers, their families and local communities are treated fairly and with respect.
By awarding the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal to farms and the Forest Stewardship Council/Rainforest Alliance Certified seals to forest managers and companies that process forest products, we help businesses market their sustainability efforts and give consumers like you the opportunity to choose products that make a difference. We also work with tourism businesses to help them introduce sustainable methods that leave a small footprint on the environment and provide a boost to local economies. Tourism businesses that meet established criteria for sustainability earn the Rainforest Alliance Verified™ mark and a listing on our Green Your Travel directory, a database of sustainable hotels and tour operators located across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ready to start spreading the word about how Rainforest Alliance certification and verification benefits people and the planet? We have some tools to get you comfortable talking about the Rainforest Alliance’s work. Our work can be difficult to explain in a succinct sound-bite or tag line. (A comprehensive approach to any problem usually is.) Visit the Talking About Our Work section for message templates and talking points. We also have a list of frequently asked questions in our Q & A Resources.
